By Jake Myers Most likely, when you start a diet, you will feel hungry. This can be quite irritating when you are trying to eat less. Luckily, the feeling of hunger can be overcome. First, ill tell you why you are feeling so hungry, and then explain steps to overcome the hunger. So, why are you feeling so hungry? The simple answer is you are not eating enough. Well that is not very helpful. A better way to put it is that you are not eating the amount you are used to. You were previously eating too much and you body got used to eating that amount to feel full. Now, you are eating less and you body still expects the large amount of food, and needs it to feel full. The reason you are still feeling hungry, assuming your diet gives you proper nutrition, is that you body is not used to the portions you are now eating. So, how do you overcome hunger? You eat more. In fairness, you eat more filling or appetite supressing foods. More Filling foods are foods high in fiber. There are many benifits to fiber. First, fiber is indigestible, so it just fills you up. Secondly, this indigestible fiber swells up in you stomach and intestines, thus making you feel full. Thirdly, the swelled fiber runs through your system cleaning out whatever gunk is in there. We all know fiber makes us poo better. This also means that is is making our internals run smoother. A smoother running inside in more efficient and requires less energy, and therefore less food. High fiber diets also lessen the risk of colon and intestinal cancers. The benifits of fiber are enourmous. There also exist appetite supressing foods. These are citrus foods, like oranges and grapefruits, and spicy foods, like jalepeno peppers. Citrus acids, for whatever reason make you feel less hungry. So if you get a sudden pang of hunger, go eat an orange. If you spice up you meals, you will find that you become more full feeling faster. Also spicy food is more tasty and will give you a kick of endorphines, which make you feel good. There is also coffee. Caffine supresses the appetite quite well. I recomend a cup of black coffee if you feel the need. I tend to get hungry around 11:00, so i get a grande iced coffee, unsweetened, from starbucks. That keeps me from overeating before lunch. Water is also good to drink. Having a glass of water will often quell hunger. As i have said elsewhere on this blog, Americans cant really tell the difference between hunger and thirst. This is not a jab at Americans, i am American, but a fact about our culture. I know i have this problem. So, when you start to feel hunger, first drink a glass of cool, ice water. If you are still hungry, try the above suggestions. On another note, mostly pertaining to the citrus trick, orange juice is not as effective as eating an orange. t has been shown that the act of chewing and swallowing alone will quell hunger. If you have to chew you orange, you get a 3 fold benifit. You reduce hunger through chewing and swallowing, citrus and the fiber in the orange. Over time you hunger will level off when you body gets used to the level of food it is getting. In the mean time, the above little tricks work wonders. Even when you hunger subsides, the above tricks are very healthy and benificial. You should continue you hunger managing techniques for you overall health and well being.
